  • Salud y Sabor: Día de los Muertos: Mexico

    5:30 pm -- 7:30 pm Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC, is a free evening of food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment.     7 pm Since pre-Hispanic times, death has played a fundamental role in Zapotec life. The traditional celebration of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, in the Zapotec community of Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico focuses on the importance of family and extended family relations. The celebration includes family-based observances and altars, and continues with a community-wide ritual remembrance in the cemetery. Presented in partnership with Metamorfosis Documentation Project, a non-profit organization documenting and supporting cross-cultural rituals and dances in the Americas through collaborative projects (more...)

  • Opera Southwest Presents Rossini’s Tancredi (Rental)

    October 23, 26, 28 & 30, 2016 2 pm—Sundays 7:30 pm—Wednesday & Friday Rossini’s Tancredi is a fully-staged opera with orchestra, sung in Italian with English translation supertitles and presented in two acts with one intermission. This will be the New Mexico premiere of Rossini’s little-known masterwork. Set against the exotic backdrop of war, intrigue, and conquest in medieval Sicily, Tancredi follows the romance between the exiled soldier Tancredi and the beautiful Amenaide.   • Making Art: Día de los Muertos Workshop

    10 am to 11:30 am School groups attend a 90-minute session which includes a short lecture on the history of the celebration, a hands-on art station, and a guided tour of our student created ofrenda (altar) installations.   • Spanish Cooking Class: Fall Recipes

    7 pm The celebration of Todos Santos in Candelaria, a small farming and weaving community in the southern Andes of Bolivia, is the Yampara culture’s version of Day of the Dead, when the souls of the deceased return to visit their families and partake of the feast celebrated in their honor.   • Fantasía Fantástica: Studio Tour with Nick Abdalla

    11 am & 1 pm Join the NHCC Visual Arts and Education team for a glimpse into Nick Abdalla’s art studio. Walking into his art space is almost like entering a larger-than-life version of one of his sculptures as twisting shapes and materials sprawl across the floor and wall space. Abdalla is a former professor of art studio at the University of New Mexico and his work is featured in the NHCC Art Museum exhibition, "Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldy Collage".     4 pm to 5:30 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center will hold its annual Despedida to celebrate  Día de los Muertos with music, poetry and hands-on art making at this time-honored community gathering. This is a great event for all ages.     7 pm With the rallying cry of “su voto es su voz” (“your vote is your voice”), Mexican American activist Willie Velasquez launched a grassroots movement that changed the nation’s political landscape forever. Through the nonpartisan Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project (SVREP), Velasquez launched over a thousand voter registration drives in 200 cities, creating a movement that has continued to grow in power each year.
