Dr. Garcia is with the Anthropology Department at the University of Texas at Austin.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.   • ¡Baile! Rueda de Casino (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class

    6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. 7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced – In order to participate in this class, dancers must know how to keep time, closed position calls, dame, enchufla, and outside turn.   • Writing Workshop: Fiction (All Genres)

    History and Literary Arts Building

    6 pm, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) The NHCC is committed to cultivating local writers and celebrating their work. In this workshop, writers read excerpts from books by Latinx authors, engage in a variety of writing exercises that build skills and generate new writing,. Each class gives a public reading as a culminating event. Instructor:  Brenna Gomez (UNM). Deadline to register: Monday, January 14, 2019. Workshop Fee: $250 (about $30 per class).   • NHCC Book Club

    5:30 pm The NHCC Book Club meets once a month to talk about that month's selected book. In February, the book will be Natalie Scenters-Zapico, The Verging Cities (poetry). Scenter-Zapico will also be reading at the NHCC on March 22, 2019. To join the NHCC Book Club, register here.   • Film: Harvest of Loneliness: The Bracero Program

    7 pm This historical documentary, shedding light on the current debate over immigration reform and the use of “guest workers” in American agriculture, examines what was known as the Bracero Program—a system put in place from 1942 to 1964 to recruit Mexican farm laborers for temporary work in the United States. The film features testimony from surviving braceros as well as these workers’ family members and descendants, along with commentary from featured experts and extensive archival material.   • First Friday: Volunteer Education and Conversation

  • Carnaval 2019: with PANdemonium and Odara Dance Ensemble

    7:30 pm The NHCC’s annual celebration of Carnaval is a dazzling spectacle of vibrant dance, engaging music, and beautiful costumes, featuring the band PANdemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble and showcasing the Carnaval celebrations of Cuba, Trinidad, Brazil and New Orleans. Carnaval, the festive season occurring before Lent in many countries, including Latin American and Caribbean nations as well as parts of the United States, is one of the world’s most widespread celebrations and one of its biggest parties.
