Film: Disney Pixar’s Coco

10:00 am Head to the NHCC as we present Disney Pixar’s Coco to kick off our Dia de Familia: Día de los Muertos celebration. Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. Día de Familia: Día de los Muertos

11:00 am – 3:00 pm NHCC | Domenici Education Building Join us for a special day for the whole family commemorating Día de los Muertos traditions. Contribute to our community ofrenda and view ofrendas created by local schools and community organizations. Decorate sugar skulls, craft paper flowers, enjoy face-painting, and sample Pan de Muerte. Visitors can also enjoy food from local food trucks, and dance and music performances from Voces de Coronado and Ballet Folklórico de Dolores Gonzales.  As a special treat, the Center will kick off (more...)

Arte Para Chiquitos

10:00 – 10:45 am Arte para chiquitos is a free, monthly, 45-minute program for babies and toddlers ages 0 months to 4 years and their caregivers that cultivates creativity and self-expression through the exploration of Hispanic/Latine arts and culture. Participants explore the NHCC Museum, Performing Arts Center, and engage in artmaking, music, movement, dance, drama, and bilingual story time. NHCC instructors model age-appropriate arts techniques that celebrate self-expression, build vocabulary, and strengthen both fine-motor and gross-motor skills in a fun environment. Re-Scheduled: Siempre Creativo: Intro to Retablos with Artist Sean Wells y Delgado

1:30 – 3:30 pm Discover the history and symbolism of retablo painting and create your own unique interpretation, using watercolors on wood prepared with traditional gesso. This is the second of two sessions with artist Sean Wells y Delgado, and participants are welcomed to attend one or both sessions. These workshops are part of the NHCC’s Siempre Creativo program, which provides free multidisciplinary arts programs for seniors throughout the summer. Colcha Community Stitch A-Long

9:30 am in-person 10:30 am Zoom Our Colcha Community Stich-A-Long is open to all levels of experience in an informal setting. This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught colcha, a Spanish Colonial embroidery style, to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award-winning artist, most recently recognized in 2019 at Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe. Annette will demonstrate as well as answer questions. 1:30 - 3:30 pm NHCC | Pete Domenici Education Building: Grand Hall Gelli Plate/Monotype is considered the painter’s print. A basic printmaking process in which an image is created by rolling or painting with inks directly onto a plate and printed onto paper. Usually only one impression is pulled. In this workshop, we will explore various ways of applying inks and paints to create unique images. Happy Arte Hour: Featuring Gelli Plate/Monotype with Artist Carol C. Sánchez

6:00 pm Our December 5th Happy Arte Hour will feature Artist Carol C. Sanchez and Gelli Plate/Monotype Printmaking. Gelli Plate/Monotype is a basic printmaking process in which an image is created by rolling or painting with ink or paints directly onto a plate and printed onto paper. We will be using gelli plates, which have many possibilities and can be used with a variety of media such as ink pads, watercolor and acrylic paints. The image is printed from a raised surface, in which the non-image areas have been carved out. Examples include wood block and Lino-cut.
