    The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to be a co-sponsor of the 11th Annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI 2019). SLI will take place Friday, November 15, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The institute is part of La Cosecha Dual Language Conference and will bring together over 240 linguistically and culturally diverse students from around the country to focus on issues of identity, leadership, and the development of an asset-based perspective related to their diverse backgrounds.   • The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas Opening Reception

    3 pm - 5 pm The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas is a community art initiative by Working Classroom student artists under the instruction of guest teaching artist Adria Malcolm which set out to explore the people of the historic Barelas area through the mediums of environmental portraiture and feature-writing. The project aims to bridge the gap between otherness and commonality through the sharing of the most vital elements of an individual's story.   • ¡Vamos al Museo!

    10:30 am to 12 pm A great morning of art-making for children of all ages and families of all sizes. A visit to the museum is included in this artist-led workshop. We will meet in the Creative Classroom in the Pete V. Domenici Building. We will visit with six Winter Spanish Market youth artists and then return to the classroom and create an ornament inspired by our observations.   • La Canoa – Giving Baque: On Hemispheric Indigeneities and the Southern Border of New Mexico

    2 pm - 4 pm Building on and departing from the work of interethnic thought-leaders in New Mexico, Dr. Gregorio Gonzales will consider how competing logics of settler-statecraft and Native American nationhood operate in a place of both Native- and nuevomexicanx-led struggles for political autonomy and religious liberty.     2 pm - 4 pm In celebration of the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial, please join Dr. Anna Nogar as she explores the many facets of Nina Otero Warren. Early 20th century nuevomexicana Adelina “Nina” Otero-Warren ran for national office as a Republican candidate to Congress from New Mexico in 1922, shortly after women gained the right to vote. An advocate of suffrage, Otero-Warren achieved political prominence for her promotion of Spanish/English education, and involvement in educational and health efforts supporting Indo-Hispano nuevomexicanos.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. The digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a (more...)
