  • Día de los Muertos: Hands on Workshop

    4 pm to 5:30 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center will hold its annual Despedida to celebrate  Día de los Muertos with music, poetry and hands-on art making at this time-honored community gathering. This is a great event for all ages. Workshop - Mini Ofrendas & Sugar Skulls at 4 pm to 5:30 pm Tour the ofrendas around the NHCC campus; enjoy music, traditional chocolate mexicano, pan de muertos, and sharing of special and heartfelt memories.   • Día de los Muertos: Despedida

    5 pm to 7 pm Día de Muertos is an annual traditional holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and many Hispanic communities. Join the NHCC and experienced, knowledgeable local artists to learn about the meaning of this celebration, the traditional arts and crafts associated with the celebration and development of ofrendas that honor families and individuals.   • Aliento: CONTRA-TIEMPO, Agua Furiosa, School Day Event

    10 am CONTRA-TIEMPO, a multilingual Los Angeles-based dance company founded in 2005, is dedicated to transforming the world through dance.  The company creates physically intense and politically astute performance work that moves audiences to imagine what is possible.   • ¡Vamos al Museo!: Día de los Muertos: Sugar Skulls & Mini Ofrendas

    10:30 am to 12:30 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to offer children’s programming on the first Saturday morning of every month. This is a fun and engaging docent and artist-led family program.  Families (limited to 25 participants) get a 30-minute museum tour focused on an art form, source inspiration, artist or type of material.  Following the tour, the whole family can create their own artwork in the Pete V.   • ¡Órale! Lowrider: Custom Made in New Mexico

    2 pm to 4 pm Join author Don Usner, and collaborators Kate Ware and Daniel Kosharek, for a presentation and book signing of ¡Órale! Lowrider: Custom Made in New Mexico, a beautiful photography book that pays homage to an enduring but evolving, cultural tradition with a fascinating compilation of four decades of lowriding, including photographs by New Mexico's most renowned documentarians with cultural studies of lowriders in their communities.   • Unveiling of Rudolfo Anaya Bust

    6 pm Join the National Hispanic Cultural Center for an unveiling and dedication of Reynaldo “Sonny” Rivera’s sculptural bust of Rudolfo Anaya in the Center’s History and Literary Arts Library from 6 to 7 pm, in advance of the Center’s presentation of Mr. Anaya’s work The Season of La Llorona in the Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.     By Rudolfo Anaya 10 am Rudolfo Anaya, acknowledged as the foremost author of New Mexican Hispanic culture and folkways and acclaimed as the founder of modern Chicano literature, has written over 40 books and plays; this is his first play.     5:30 pm -- 7:30 pm Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC, is a free evening of food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture. Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment.
