  • Camina el Autor: The Iconography of Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala, Peruvian/Quechuan Chronicler

    History and Literary Arts Building

    Camina el Autor showcases the extraordinary work of Guaman Poma; explores the history of the indigenous people of Peru, Andean civilization, and Spanish conquest; and broadens our understanding of Peruvian culture and history.The digital images and accompanying texts have been provided to the NHCC by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with assistance from the Consulate General of Peru in Denver. The NHCC has curated these (398 fullpage drawings) to present a vibrant and informative exhibit that encourages learning, discovery, and contemplation.   • ALMA: Mosaics From the Soul

    The ALMA Summer Institute (formally Mayor's Art Institute) was created in 1999 to provide paid training and mentorship for artistically talented youth and adults through its apprenticeship model. The apprentices work with Lead Artists to create handmade tile mosaics, helping with every aspect of making a public artwork. In 8-10 weeks, they assist with design, carve tiles from wet clay, glaze tiles, fire a kiln, cement tiles to the wall, and grout the finished artwork.     12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.   • Film: ¡COLORES! The Musical Adventures of John Donald Robb in New Mexico

    7 pm The late John Donald Robb loved and composed all kinds of music, but his passion for the songs of everyday folk is what he is remembered for most. Roaming the countryside of the Southwest during the 40s and 50s, Robb recorded and transcribed over 3,000 Hispano folk songs, the largest collection of its time. This documentary celebrates the life of this adventurous musician and the modern day ethnomusicologists who continue to record and archive New Mexico's disappearing folk music traditions.
