    The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to be a co-sponsor of the 11th Annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI 2019). SLI will take place Friday, November 15, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The institute is part of La Cosecha Dual Language Conference and will bring together over 240 linguistically and culturally diverse students from around the country to focus on issues of identity, leadership, and the development of an asset-based perspective related to their diverse backgrounds.   • Diwali: The Festival of Lights

    5:30 pm - 7:30 pm Diwali is one of the biggest Hindu festivals, celebrated in India with great enthusiasm and happiness for five continuous days. The third day is celebrated as the main Diwali festival, or “Festival of Lights,” and different varieties of colorful fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day, people light diyas (lamps) and candles all around their houses. They perform Laxmi Puja in the evening and seek divine blessings from the Goddess of Wealth.   • There Must Be Other Names for the River

    7 pm (doors open at 6 pm) 516 ARTS, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and UNM Art & Ecology Program artists Marisa Demarco, Dylan McLaughlin, and Jessica Zeglin present There Must Be Other Names for the River. This composition for six singers is based on streamflow data from the river known today as the Rio Grande. Each singer channels the river, representing a point where flows were observed and recorded.     12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. The digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a (more...)

  • Book Reading and Signing: Norma Elia Cantú, Cabañuelas

    2 pm Norma Elia Cantú will read from her new novel, Cabañuelas (University of New Mexico Press, 2019), the successor to her award-winning Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera, which chronicles her childhood experiences on the border. Nena leaves Laredo, Texas, and moves to Madrid, Spain, to research the historical roots of traditional fiestas in Laredo. Immersing herself in post-Franco Spain and its rich history, its food, music, and fiestas, Nena finds herself falling for Paco, a Spaniard. No experience is necessary to participate in this class. 7:15 pm to 8:15 pm—Advanced Class In order to participate in this class, dancers must come to at least one 6 pm class and be familiar with the vocabulary and movement introduced in these classes.   • The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas Opening Reception

    3 pm - 5 pm The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas is a community art initiative by Working Classroom student artists under the instruction of guest teaching artist Adria Malcolm which set out to explore the people of the historic Barelas area through the mediums of environmental portraiture and feature-writing. The project aims to bridge the gap between otherness and commonality through the sharing of the most vital elements of an individual's story.
