Celebrating the Life of Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes

2 pm to 5 pm Join the National Hispanic Cultural Center in celebrating the life of Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes on October 8, 2016, in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre and Cayetana Romero Lobby, both within the NHCC's Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts. Dr. Zuniga Forbes was born on June 17, 1938, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and passed on August 28, 2015. The eldest of eight children and mother of two, Dr. Zuniga Forbes was a remarkable woman who cared deeply about her family and community. (more...)

Making Art: Día de los Muertos Workshop

10 am to 11:30 am ** School groups attend a 90-minute session which includes a short lecture on the history of the celebration, a hands-on art station, and a guided tour of our student created ofrenda (altar) installations. Día de los Muertos Exhibition – Call for Entries

10 am to 5 pm Each year the Education Department at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, works with schools and community organizations, to host an Ofrenda (altar) Exhibit, in celebration of Día de los Muertos. Your altar Installation dates are October 12-14, 2016 The exhibit runs October 18-November 11, 2016 Please provide your own tables, boxes or structure for you Altar. K-12 Educator’s Workshop: Día de los Muertos: Papel Picado, Shrines, and Sugar Skulls

5 pm to 8 pm Join the UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute and the National Hispanic Cultural Center for a free professional development workshop for K-12 educators focused on Día de los Muertos.  Led by artist and educator Arturo Olivas, participants will learn the history behind papel picado, shrines, and sugar skulls, before delving into hands-on instruction in all three elements. Certificates of professional development, refreshments, and supplies will be provided to participants. First Friday: Docent Education and Conversation

The First Friday: Docent Education and Conversation for October will be held on October 14th not on October 7th. 9:30 am – 12 pm On the first Friday of each month, NHCC docents and core volunteers meet for coffee and conversation along with monthly presentations on topics that build the knowledge and skills of the docent core to give tours, educate the NHCC visitors and share the NHCC mission and programs.
