  • Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Sacred Journeys II

    Saturday, at 7 pm Sunday at 2 pm Classical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in this reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance, music, and spoken word. Mirabal collaborates with internationally renowned New York City Ballet dancer Jock Soto, of Navajo and Puerto Rican descent; Soto, who is originally from Gallup, NM, and will also make guest appearances onstage, now lives in Eagle Nest, NM.   • Mundos de Mestizaje

    12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. The digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a (more...)

  • ALMA: Mosaics From the Soul

    The ALMA Summer Institute (formally Mayor's Art Institute) was created in 1999 to provide paid training and mentorship for artistically talented youth and adults through its apprenticeship model. The apprentices work with Lead Artists to create handmade tile mosaics, helping with every aspect of making a public artwork. In 8-10 weeks, they assist with design, carve tiles from wet clay, glaze tiles, fire a kiln, cement tiles to the wall, and grout the finished artwork.   • Who We Are, Together: NM Families Project Presentation for Sanchez, Martinez, Tovar and Begley

    History and Literary Arts Building

    2-4 pm This project engaged 2-3 generations of seven NM families in testing their DNA and researching their family lineage with the help of the NHCC and experts in the field. For seven Sundays these families will present what they learned about who they are, where they are, where they came from, and from whom they descend, followed by dialogue. No experience is necessary to participate in this class. 7:15 pm to 8:15 pm—Advanced Class In order to participate in this class, dancers must come to at least one 6 pm class and be familiar with the vocabulary and movement introduced in these classes.   • 22 Poems: A Reading and Candlelight Vigil for El Paso

    6-8 pm  Please join Albuquerque poets in honoring the victims of the El Paso shooting. The El Paso Community Foundation will host a table at the vigil.  They have established the El Paso Shooting Victims' Fund to support the families of those lost. Albuquerque and Santa Fe Poets Laureate will read up to three minutes during this Candlelight Vigil.
