    ¡Cine Magnífico! celebrates Spanish and Latin American culture through presentation of some of the best of modern cinema in a weekend-long program, featuring work by first-time filmmakers and established masters alike. The subject matter runs the gamut from comedies, action, romances and documentary films, to dramatic masterpieces.   • Opening Reception for El Perú: Art in the Contemporary Past

    Join us on Friday, September 6 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm to celebrate the opening of our newest exhibition, El Perú: Art in the Contemporary Past. The event is free and open to the public.     This year, the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation’s signature fundraising event, Maravilla, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, will highlight the vibrant and rich culture of Peru. Maravilla provides direct support to the NHCC and its Foundation to promote, preserve and advance Hispanic arts, culture and humanities, while providing a unique cultural experience to attendees.     10:30 am This month, Robert Martinez will present “Mulatos of Cochiti: Caste in Spanish New Mexico.”  In this presentation, former Deputy State Historian and now newly appointed State Historian Robert Martinez examines the role of racial mixing, identity, and the categorizing of humans living in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. The approach will be through the lens of the casta, or caste system.     12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas.
