Dr. Garcia is with the Anthropology Department at the University of Texas at Austin. A Night of Fiction

In 2018, the NHCC launched a series of community writing workshops that run throughout the year. La Canoa: Daniel Webb “The Power and Place of the Apachería in Colonial New Mexico”
History and Literary Arts Building2 pm Please join Daniel Webb as he examines the history of the diverse population of Athapaskan-speaking peoples identified as Apache (Ndé) in the colonial archives of northern New Spain. He will trace the different stages of their migration and territorial expansion across the vast geographical expanse known as the Apachería (the Apaches' ancestral homelands), illustrating their relations with other sovereign Indian nations and Hispano settlers, and the policies that Spain introduced in the eighteenth century to restrict their mobility. National Poetry Month
History and Literary Arts BuildingJoin the NHCC’s History and Literary Arts program for a month of events including widely distributed pocket-size poems (in English and Spanish), poetry readings and book signings (including those associated with the Children’s Bilingual Book Festival), displays, and other events celebrating Latinx poets. In 2019, for the 100th birthday of Walt Whitman, we will pair several Whitman poems with poems by Latinx writers, creating a “conversation” between poets who never met, but who talk to each other across time. NHCC Summer Reading Program Applications Due April 5
In 2019, the National Hispanic Cultural Center will launch its first summer reading program for students in grades 3 and 4 who need help with reading. This program is part of the Bilingual Children's Book Festival Students will read with trained tutors on a weekly basis in the NHCC library during the summer months, June-August, 2019. The NHCC library includes a collection of bilingual children’s books (Spanish and English) as well as age-appropriate books in English that are focused on Hispanic/Latino culture.
